The Sydney University Association of Malaysian Students (SUAMS) is a non-profit society registered under the University of Sydney Student Union. With over 50 years of rich history, we have a uniquely multicultural membership and dedicate ourselves to supporting and uniting all Malaysian students through their transition from Malaysia to Australia, and in particular, Sydney.

Proudly bearing the slogan of “friendship, unity, love”, these are the three simple goals we strive to help our members find and achieve through social, cultural and welfare initiatives.

SUAMS LIFE

As a society, SUAMS seeks to bring together members of all different backgrounds, cultures and nationalities from all across the University of Sydney. This is achieved by providing a fun and exciting social platform throughout the academic year at venues both within university campus and around wider Sydney. We organise a large range of social events each year.

These range from large-scale dance parties in conjunction with other Malaysian and Singaporean organisations, down to simple and homely “lepak/chill” activities with our Kopitiam and Chill series. Creating a tight-knit sense of belonging between everyone in our community is one of our key visions for 2019.

THE MALAYSIAN CULTURE

Since we are a society by students, SUAMS promotes and shares our unique Malaysian culture and traditions through various events and activities. Mamak Night remains SUAMS' flagship cultural event, being a loud and proud celebration of all that is Malaysian, including cuisine, performances and games.

Additional cultural events include our Deepavali Night celebration and events for Malaysian festivals such as Malaysia Day and Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Our event calendar also features collaborations between SUAMS and other USU societies during the Asian Food Bazaar, as well as SUAMS' welcoming events each semester introducing a broad range of Malaysian food, and other festivals.

THE FAMILY AWAY FROM HOME

Studying in a foreign country can be tough, and SUAMS aims to ease the journey through student welfare initiatives. Our Facebook group for incoming freshers provides a platform for freshers to approach SUAMS seniors before starting university. Introduced in 2017, the mentor/mentee program provides new members with a mentor to support and guide them through the first semester of university.

Other welfare initiatives include the Kopitiam and Chill series, which will create a close-knit support network for SUAMS members. Activities within the series include study groups for peer academic support, as well as meet-ups to wind down after a stressful week. Mental health awareness and support sessions are also to be carried out.
